How to Create the Best Online Application

Creating a successful online application is the first step necessary to reach the immediate goal of getting called for an interview. By applying the knowledge I share with you in this article, you will shortly be on your way to your Invitation Only Assessment Day!

The big airlines such as Emirates, Etihad or Qatar Airways receive 10.000 applications every month. They will select only 10% of these applicants and offer them a chance to attend an interview.
They will get the best of the best based on how their work experience is presented.

Let’s say you work for Funky Pizza where you are a waitress. When you are filling your online application, on the job description you may say:

Waitress – Funky Pizza
take pizza orders,
bring pizza and drinks to the table,
clear dirty dishes,
bring the bill and take the money.

Now close your eyes and imagine this person: she sounds bored with her job, doing it mechanically and describing only the physical actions involved. She doesn’t sound like she likes her job.

You may also say:

Waitress – Funky Pizza
welcome customers to the restaurant and show them to their seats
present the menu options and make recommendations based on chef’s daily briefing
deliver the order and check customer satisfaction with the dishes
ask for feedback and additional orders
handle the payment using cash, credit card or coupons
farewell the guests and express desire for business continuation
tidy up the area and prepare for next customers

Once again, close your eyes and imagine this person. She is smiling, welcoming and knowledgeable.
Which one would you consider more professional and a happy worker?

When you talk about what your job means, put yourself in your customer shoes. Almost any job could be expressed beautifully from the guest’s perspective.

Avoid stating facts of what your daily job assignments consist of, such as “move tables”, “give menus”, “clean floors” . Instead use customer words such as “reassigned the restaurant setting whenever necessary”, “distributed menu cards and presented the daily specials”, “followed up that restaurant cleanliness was respected at all times”.

See the above example from Funky Pizza Waitress and adjust it for your field and experience.

Make it easy on the people who read your online application to call you for an assessment by choosing the right words when you present your experience.

The second very important aspect of your online application is submitting the best photos.
You are required to submit a passport sized photo and a full length photo. If you can  have these professionally taken in a studio, that is very good. If you cannot do that, you may ask a friend or a family member who is comfortable using a camera to take some shots.

A good photo will maximize your chances for a successful online application.

Here are some points to keep in mind:
✓ Chose a light background, without furniture, plants or objects of art visible in the picture.
✓ Ladies, wear makeup. Look for some pictures with the airline’s flight attendants and try to copy their makeup. Go for neutral colors such as brown and grey eye-shades and subtle application. Less is more!
✓ Smile. Do not show a wide smile, but have a subtle, friendly and approachable smile. While you take the picture, imagine that your colleague is just telling you that you won “the most helpful colleague” title. Look natural and genuinely kind.
✓ Wear business attire:
LADIES

Dark colored suit and a blouse, knee length skirt, pantyhose and high heels. Your hair should be neatly tied in a bun. You can also choose a professional looking dress.
GENTLEMEN

Dark colored suit with a collared shirt and tie and polished shoes. You should be cleanly shaved and your hair combed back.
✓ Stand tall and proud!
✓ For the full length picture, both arms and legs must be visible.
DO NOT
✗ Wear fashion statement clothing, such as jeans, T-shirts or boots.
✗ Forget to check the length of your skirt. It will have to be mid-knee or mid-calf, not longer or shorter.
✗ Apply metallic strong make-up colors such as orange, blue or green.
✗ Wear your hair loose, especially if its very long. Rule of thumb: if it touches your shoulder, it should be tied back. If you have a bob or a pixie cut, style it smartly. No spikes, gels or overdone fringes.
✗ Wear bulky jewelry such as glass or beads thick necklaces, big earrings or too many bangles.

A picture says a thousand words!

Hello Kara, thanks again for all your great responses. I recently did and online application for Etihad and I got an email saying that my application was unsuccessful (an automated response). My application was very similar to a successful one that I submitted fir Qatar, so I’m beginning to wonder what may be wrong with my application. Do you think writing longer sentences for answers that can be a simple yes/no could have affected my application? Or should I have a completely new resume suited for each airline? Do you know of any possible ways to improve an online application?

    Kind regards.

      Hi Jay,
I am obviously unable to tell you the exact reason for being rejected. Cabin crew recruitment drives are highly competitive events and only the best of the best will be selected. There are many factors that are taken into consideration such as language abilities, soft skills, customer service experience as well as impeccable first impressions. This is all measured against the rest of the candidates.
For a better online application, short answers are important (it shows respect towards the other person’s time), as well as exquisite CV and photos.

    Hello Kara!
I know that for Qatar open days you don’t have to apply on-line.
But as the website suggests, I started entering my information, attaching CV, photos and copy of documents. And now, 5 days before the open day, I got and e-mail stating that I have not been successful on this occasion. Do you think that I still should try and go to the OD, since I already paid for tickets and hotel where the OD will happen?
    Thank You!

I am sure it is because of the mistake i made when i apply.

Meli, there isn’t much I can say to change your situation. An email from the recruitment team telling you they won’t be moving forward with your application means exactly what it says – you must wait 6 months to reapply.
Use this time wisely to prepare your application, documents and approach to the interview so that when the day of the interview actually comes you will be prepared for it.
I hope this helps you view this from a different perspective.

I have a question for you. I am 28 years old girl from Russia. And just now I found something that will makes me happy fully – to be a cabin crew. Before starting the application process, i would like to analyze my background. What better to highlight in my CV take into account my personal experience. All my life i had worked with art (assistant of director in theater, set designer) also i had internship like craft teacher with childrens abroad. Also every summer I took part in international work-camps. This great experience with foreigners and make me really happy.

Kara, what do you think? What i can to emphasize in a CV? i need to write about a hobby, like volunteer work camps?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

My question is about a COVER LETTER that is nedded besides a CV and about such questions within the application process as: Why do u want..? Why this company..?(like in Final interview). These issues really make me nervous..(
Do they read a CL? And What type it should be, how long?
And these questions: should I answer with “my story”, as if I answer during the FInt?..)
    Thank you in advance)!

Mariia, they don’t make the Cover Letter a requirement. If you want to attach one, then you can, they give you the space for it, but it is not compulsory.

    Hello,
I’ve already been on Final Interview of Emirates and I’m waiting for the call. I’ve already fill all Jobpage but yesterday I noticed that all of my data disappeared. And my job submissions looks like this now:
    Job Posting:10-Jan-14 – Job Number: 130000X8
Job Status: Active (Accepting Job Submissions)
    Finish Draft Submission|Withdraw.
I wanted to fill it again but I can’t because my e-mail is already in database and I can’t pass from Personal Information to Work Experience. Can I just get to know if everything is ok? I already fill all information before and I didn’t deleted anything.
I would be very grateful for your reply because I don’t know why that happened and what I can do now.

Click on Finish Draft Submission. Your application is still in draft. There is required data that you haven’t yet filled in. Most likely it is at the Personal Information if you are unable to go to the next step.

Does this mean that i should apply again once they put another different assesment date or i should leave my previous application.

I just want to take this time to say you are really doing a great job by helping us out there. May God bless you and increase you.

First am staying in Botswana I would like to join the Emirates airlines, so my problem is I have tattooed my eyebrows and my leg but the one in my leg is not big I can always cover it with the make up same as the one for the eyebrows, am very fluent in written/spoken English currently am working as a document control in one of the big companies here in Botswana, I deal with people everyday, my experience it not a problem my main problem is the tattoos and my height Kara its 1.58..do you think I can qualify…because my neighboring country South Africa has a training school for cabin Crew which am planning to do first before I start applying….they train us for 6weeks.do you think I can qualify please advice.

    • Kara

      Reply Reply May 25, 2015

Potsanyane, any sort of visible tattoo is not accepted by Emirates. If your eyebrows look reasonably natural, you might get away with it, however if the one on your leg is visible while wearing a skirt, you will not be accepted. For the training, it really isn’t necessary to go through it to be selected. Try to use free resources to help you get through the interview. All the recruitment is South Africa is organized directly by the airline, without any agency.
As for your height, as long as you can reach 212cm on your tip toes, you should be fine.

    Hi Kara! 🙂

    Good evening.

My experience is human resources but specifically handling reception for colleagues which highly polished my customer services skills. Also, communication and my grooming/physical presentation is at par.

I always update my online application in emirates and etihad but always replied unsuccessful. I even attended an open day for emirates and qatar airlines which won me compliments for my good grooming and teeth but no call back.

I’ve been trying to get in the cabin crew industry for 5 years now. I have personally invested on training specifically for this project.

All I need is an assessment day invite but was never granted an access even once.

Hmmm… can you suggest anything that will make my online application noticed???

      You need to go here
      http://careers.qatarairways.com/qatarairways/vacancysearch.aspx
      and search Job Function>>>Cabin Crew
In March there are no recruitment events in Mumbai, however when you see one advertised, click on it. At the bottom of the page you will find Apply Now. This is how your online application is done. Once you did that, the airline will review your CV and if they consider it suitable for the position they might invite you for an interview. Alternatively, you can go to the advertised location for a CV drop off in person.

Fadzai, the airlines in the Middle East do not require any previous experience. As long as you can display certain key skills (such as customer service mindset, team player, empathy, etc), you can be given a chance. That being said however, a strong CV might open doors and get you a chance to interview.
I recommend you look into customer service jobs, volunteer work or any other courses or education that might add to the CV.
You can apply online, however you will be required to travel for a face to face interview.

Hi Kara, thanks for all the info, i had changed my cv accordingly and purchased the e-book, it has some really interesting info. I applied to qatar and was invited to assessment day, passed the english and reach test, however after the reach test, they sat me down and the othe interviewer asked me to tell her about myself as the day before i spoke to the other interviewer. I answered by saying my name and age and then my work experience. After this they did an elimination and i was eliminated. So it definitely had to do with the way i answered or the info i gave or just speaking too long. Can you please share on how to answer questions? Everyone was asked different questions like: whats your proudest moment or tell me more about your hobby which is travel (was written in someones cv).

i think my problem is the way i answer. i gave an answer stating where i worked and my positions and then i looked at the interviewers whilst talking, i smiled throughout.

Not sure what im doing wrong. I’m accepted for another airline assessment day, i want to do things right this time round as i really want to work for this specific airline.

Also for qatar do we have o wait 6 months before applying again like emirates?

    • Kara

      Reply Reply February 27, 2015

      Hi Ela,

I really doubt that answering one single question is what caused you to be eliminated. There are many factors that are taken into consideration such as language abilities, soft skills, customer service experience as well as impeccable first impressions. This is all measured against the rest of the candidates.
You answered your question to the best of your ability and that’s exactly what you should do: name, age, a bit of career background. I don’t know how long you spoke, so that may be something to look into.
For Qatar you don’t need to wait for 6 months.
I am sure you will do better next time 🙂

-I have read on your previous comments that career objective is not necessary to put on CV since out objective is obviously shown already, so what should I highlight first? educational background?
-one more thing is I had undergone some trainings in FA school before should I list it down still on my CV? And the awards which I have gained when I was studying?
-what should be the normal font and size for CV? and the photo to be attach on CV 2×2 or passport?
-lastly I am currently working as a fulltime and during my off im still having other part time should I write it down still?

    Hi,
Im having a CV drop off day soon, and the day after that: Invite only assessment day.
Im applying for the first time and I would like to get a few things straight. Can u help me with this, and tell me if I understood this right:

    1. I write my CV nd i go to the paragraph – Invite only assessment day >Apply online here< I click on that.

    2. At the bottom of that page is a registration form. Do I download that and print it blank (fill it with hand writing), or fill in my answers in a computer and then print?

    3. At the top of that page on the right is the: Apply now , do I go to the Apply now only after I fill in my registration form and my CV, or the registration form doesnt have to be filled for the apply.

When I click on the Apply now it says:
On completion of your application you will be required to attach your CV, one passport-sized photo and one full length photo in business attire.
Please confirm that you have these documents ready before you begin.

It doesnt say anything about a registration form. Is it necessary to prepare it for the apply? If not, when does it need to be filled?

    5. When I finish applying, I dont go to the CV drop off day by myself? I go only if I get an e-mail to come?
I dont understand the difference between a CV drop off day and a Invite only assessment day.
Is the CV drop of day an interview, and a Assessment day testing day if u pass the interview?

Sorry for being so extensive, as I said, Im applying for the first time, and Im not so sure I got everything right.
Hope u'll understand my questions, and help me. Thanks in advance.

    • Kara

      Reply Reply February 13, 2015

      Hi Maya,

If you fill in the online application, you must then wait until your application is screened. If successful, you will be invited for an invitation only assessment.
If you want to skip this step, just go to the advertised location for a CV drop off. You will need a copy of your CV and photos. If successful, they will call you for the invitation only assessment that takes place the next day.
You need to have the registration form printed and filled in by hand. This is only necessary for the assessment day, not for the CV drop off day.
I hope this makes things clearer,

      -Kara

Rahel, best is to wear a short sleeved blouse or dress and knee length skirt. The passport photo can be taken in the same time or just cropped from the full length one. The purpose of this photo is that they need to see approximately how will you look in their uniform. So wear full makeup, do your hair just like a flight attendant and all should be well.

    • Kara

      Reply Reply December 2, 2014

Rahel, you should wear a short sleeve blouse and knee length skirt or a dress with the same specifications. The purpose of this picture is for the recruiters to be able to see you in their uniform. Put on makeup and do your hair in a similar manner as the airline’s flight attendants and everything should be fine.

Patrick, Flight Attendant Central is not an airline. We have no affiliation with Emirates. To be considered for any job with the airlines, you must apply online on the careers website of the company you are interested to work for.

And for assessment day for 25. October 2014 I applied again. I completed my CV with more and important experience, but they did not invited me. I applied about 10 days before assessment day.

Zarra, you will not be asked for a marriage certificate during the open day. Also, this information is not something that needs to be included in your international travel passport. Just fill in the forms truthfully.

Oh oooop’s I have one more question. My assesment is in a different country and I’m flying there the day before and leaving the day after the assessment but I just reread some added information and it says they could ask you to come back the next day. Is that usual? My ticket is nonrefundable and I can’t afford to change it, will that be a problem?

    • Kara

      Reply Reply October 21, 2014

It depends on the location Lola. Sometimes they ask you to stay for the assessment day in continuation of the open day. If they have too many candidates to screen, they might schedule the assessment for the next day.

    Hello Kara,

Thank you for this website. I applied to some airlines and got an assessment day for Etihad on the 27th which I’m both very excited and nervous about. I would really love to work for a Middle Eastern Airline so I really hope it works out. Any suggestions would be great 😉
My first question is regarding the dress code for the assessment day. I recently moved from Latin America to Europe and had to travel very light so I don’t have many options. I was thinking a black dress and a black blazer (the dress is strapless but with the blazer buttoned up there’s no way of knowing) and I’m wondering if that’s ok because it’s not a suit or necessily matching set.
Second question is, I applied to Emirates as well about a month ago and haven’t heard back from them. Am I supposed to recieve an email with an acceptance or rejection or will it just let me know on the website?

Again thank you for all the information you provide, it is truly appreciated.

    • Kara

      Reply Reply October 21, 2014

      Hi Lola,

The dress and blazer are perfectly acceptable for the interview.
On Emirates’ careers portal you can follow the progress of your application. If successful, you will receive an email with the details of the assessment you can attend. If unsuccessful, you will not receive an email, however you will be able to see it in your status on the portal. Keep on checking, it usually takes them up to 6 weeks to review a new candidate.

I want to apply for Emirates and if I click on online application it gives me the option to upload my cv or fill in the online application manually? Which one will be better?

And there are no open days in my country (South Africa), only assessment days? or that is how it appears on the Emirates website. One is 26 Oct and the other is 29 Nov? So should I apply and wait for an invite?

    Thanks,
    Mariska

    • Kara

      Reply Reply October 17, 2014

Hi Mariska. You can choose either method. If you want to do it manually, you need to input all the data yourself. If you want to upload the CV, the system will fill in some of the fields with information from your CV. You can of course edit this any time.
For any assessment days, you must apply online and allow 4-6 weeks for an answer. If shortlisted, you will be provided with an invitation letter for the nearest recruitment event.
      Good luck!

I made an online applicant account the following day and within 3 days got a regret letter…is that normal, my status didn’t even change from ‘New’, 3 days later boom status changes to ‘Regret’

    • Kara

Lalit, unfortunately there is no set procedure for online status updates. A regret is a regret regardless in which form it comes. The only thing that matters is that you should look back to your experience, identify the areas you need to address, prepare more and be successful next time they come for recruitment in your country.

Rachel, it really depends on your location. Sometimes they send you an invitation to the assessment day only if they are organizing them in your country. Meanwhile they just hold on to your application. It is safe to say that if you don’t hear from them within 6 months, you can assume you were not successful. For you it has been less than 3 months. It is just a matter of timing and patience.

Thanks a ton for the kind of help you provide to all aspirants. I have one question. I’m 29 and I have a large mole on my collar bone and my skin is not impeccable. I have light pock marks due to acne in my teenage years. I also have a light scar on my knee from an accident.

I am planning to go for an assesment for Ethihad aiways in Mumbai, India on 10th May. After the CV gets shortlisted, I’d be called the next day(if so.. ) I have worked as a customer service executive for an international Bpo for Bmi airlines for 10 months. I don’t have a relieving letter from the company as I had to leave abruptly due to personal reasons. I have a few print-outs of customer appreciation e mails as well,Should I mention it on the CV?

Also, should I give it a try giving my skin condition? I’m apprehensive about it. Though I know for a fact that I’m presentable and good-looking. Please suggest. Thanks in advance!

      Hi Medha,

If your skin’s appearance can be improved by use of makeup, everything should be fine. Your mole however I am not quite sure. I guess it depends on the recruiter.
All your experience should be included in your CV. You can mention to them you are unable to provide a reference letter for your last job, but you will still be requested to provide 2 service letters from other employers.

hey Kara, quick question. I am very passionate about becoming a flight attendant – I’m applying right now online for the Qatar Airways open day happening in Nairobi on the 20th April.
I am engaged to be married (very committed to my fiance), but the only issue is, there is no option for my status (engaged or unmarried partner) in the online application. (the only options they have given us are: married, widowed, separated, single – which is a compulsory question) and I do not fall in any of those categories..
I have heard and read that if I apply as “single”, I have to maintain that status for up to 3 years/5 years which does not work for me or my fiance (my fiance will not have the right to visit me or get any special benefits/rights as a family member would due to company rules and regulations)…
If I say I am married, will Qatar Airways ask for my marriage certificate at the end of the day (I do not have certificate since I am not yet married – marriage date is still unplanned/unknown).

Also which title should I put when I have an unmarried partner: Mrs, Miss, Ms? (only options given- compulsory)

Please advise me on what to do – I really want this job, but I also do not want to do blunder and say something that will not work for me in the future.

    Thank you
    Rexer

    • Kara

      Reply Reply April 13, 2014

Hi Rexer. What they ask about is your official marital status. That is the one you can provide a paper for and the one you registered with your local authorities. Being engaged for marriage is not an official status until you get married.
Your current status is single and the papers you fill should show that. If you get hired, you can ask for permission to change the status in your contract and see how that goes.
Your title is Miss Rexer 🙂
      All the best!

I had cabin crew training 5 years ago but didn’t apply for jobs due to personal problems, it’s been a long time since then… Well i started over and i feel that i still want to be a cabin crew, i become more mature and know what i want. I now don’t have the experience that matches my age(26)
My concern is when i apply online and meet the juries in the assessement day, i’m sure they might ask me “Did you apply for cabin crew jobs?” I probably will answer NO so they will ask me “Why didn’t you apply for jobs during this long period?”
Is it okay that i tell them i had personal problems ? i don’t want to turn the interview into speaking about my personal problems. My lack of experience is it a big handicap?
I have the skills required but only my lack of experience is making me worried about getting the job. I want to show you my cv so tell me how 🙂

Yassine, when you don’t have any sort of experience, the interview will need to be focused on examples from your personal life or school life. It is important to discuss what have you been doing to improve you skills since your last job. Did you pursue any education, did you read, did you research or you just stayed home and watched TV. Do you see the difference here? Try to get an unpaid (volunteer) job to add value to your CV.

Sarp, I would personally avoid Greece all together. It is not about the population, it is about how many people need a job. The events there are extremely busy, sometimes thousands of people show up. It is quite difficult to make yourself noticed in such a large pool of talent.

    Hello Kara,

I would like to get some advice from you. I born and raised in the Netherlands but I am originally Turkish. I live temporary in Istanbul because i decide to travel in Turkey.
So on 15 february there is a career day in Amsterdam and on 22 february in Athene/ Greece.
The nearest location is Athene, but should I go to Amsterdam or doesn’t make that any sense.

And could I go attend both cities? Should this give me more chance to get through the selection for the interview?

If there is any suggestion from your side please share it with me.

    Thank you in advance.

      Hi Sarp,

You can attend whichever event you want. Athens however is very busy, so if you can afford to go to Amsterdam, that will increase your chances due to the fewer candidates.
You can’t attend both cities. If you go to one event are you are rejected during any stage of the assessment, you can participate in another recruitment event only after 6 months.
I recommend you go through these articles or get the book ‘How To become a flight attendant for airlines in the Middle East’
      Good luck 🙂

Neither Emirates, nor Qatar Airways require a cover letter from their applicants. Just follow the instructions to apply online and have a copy of your CV ready.

Dear Kara, I applied to Etihad last June and they sent me the invitation to the assessment, but my application expired in December because I could not travel to the destinations offered. In their invitation, they had said that after 6 months, if I didn’t book anything, the application expired and I would need to re apply, and that they may or may not send an invitation again. However, 21 days before it was going to expire, I was sent an e-mail that said “Please note that your job alert for Etihad Airways will expire in 21 days. Please re-register if you wish to continue receiving job alerts by clicking …”, and there was a link, which I clicked. First of all, I know that “Job Alert” is not the same as “Application”. However, now every time I enter my account, I see everything intact, as it used to be the first day, all my details are there, and most importantly, I see the dates for assessments and the link to book the one I wish… I had thought that after expiration, my application and my account would be deactivated and that I would have to create a new account, fill and complete everything again, wait for the invitation etc. but it didn’t happen and everything is still there, I would like to choose a date because now I could go to one of the destinations offered, so I suppose I will really see if my application is still active when I click on “Book”, and they should send me and e-mail with the confirmation details… but I wouldn’t like to realise that I need to reapply and wait for some precious days for the invitation (if it comes) when I am certain to click on “Book” on a specific date… and I would like to go very soon and not wait any more…
Do you think I should contact the company to ask if my application is still valid or if I need to do something else (such as create a new account altogether and reapply)?
    I am a bit worried right now… 🙁
Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Eugenia. This sounds like a very fortunate computer error. You can always try to book the location you want and see what happens. Worst case scenario, if they ask you about it, you can always say you assumed they reconsidered your application. Best case scenario, you go to the assessment and get the job. It is your call. If this feels weird to you, get in touch with them and see what they recommend you do.

Thanks for the feedback and patience from you, I really appreciate. Yes I was very upset but I’m better now, I’ll keep trying.
Oh! And my appearance was impeccable! I wish I could send you a pix. I’m very tall and I’ve contested in Miss Nigeria beauty pageant where I placed among the top 10.

However, I met a lady on LinkedIn who told me that the airlines recruit cabin crew based on the need of a Nationality. That it does not matter where anybody attend an open day, if there’s no need for a certain Nationality (e.g. Nigerians), I will not get selected. Please is this true?

    • Kara

      Reply Reply October 11, 2013

Hi Chinedu, the information you received is half correct. There is no ‘need for certain nationality’. That makes no difference to the airline. There is however need for certain languages to be spoken on board. If you are from Nigeria but you are able to speak ‘high demand’ languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Dutch, Russian and German, you will be given priority over the other candidates because you have the language skills that are required. So I can only assume that in Egypt, priority was given to the candidates that were able to speak Arabic. Your attitude however is very good. Think of maybe saving up and travel to Dubai/Abu Dhabi and participate in Assessment Days there for all available airlines. All the best!

Lakshika, if you plan to apply online, one of the required documents you must submit is a passport copy. Without it, your application will not be considered. You can of course try to go to the location (it is an open day and online application is not compulsory) and explain your situation. Tell them you are in the process of obtaining a passport and you will send them the copy as soon as you have it. You might be accepted to interview. I hope it all works out for you 🙂

    Hi Kara,
    It’s me again.
I attended an open day in Cairo, Egypt 28th September. I traveled all the way from Lagos, Nigeria to attend this with my few savings. I wasn’t successful, about 50 people were selected after the CV dropping. I went back the following day to see the lady that conducted it and I realized everybody that was selected had a white skin!
First of all I was surprised it was only one lady conducting the whole interview, she was even speaking Arabic sometimes! how are we to know she was not biased. I made two friends on that first day who didn’t even have customer care experience on their CV’s and they are both Egyptians and they were selected.
She didn’t even consider that I came all the way for the event and she asked me to keep trying! lol

Hi Chinedu. I am sorry to hear about your negative experience. I know you must be disappointed and quite angry. When you decide to participate in an Open Day, you take the chance that your CV may not even be selected. And because there is no feedback, you need to find a reason that sounds acceptable enough for you. In this case, I am happy to say that the reason you found is not the one that caused your elimination during the CV drop off. Emirates employes more than 120 nationalities, from all corners of the world. There is a strong Nigerian cabin crew community in Emirates, as well as employees from all the other African countries. The CV selection during the Open Day is based on skills (Arabic language is a great advantage, which might have caused your CV to be rejected) and previous experience, as well as a positive first impression (neat appearance, appropriate attire, etc).
Emirates has very high standards, and there are many people who only manage to get the job after 3-4 tries. If this is your dream, don’t give up. Consider however other airlines as well, such as Qatar Airways and Etihad.

Hi Fernando, the safest bet for business attire is a suit with collared shirt and a tie, polished shoes and a big smile. You can play with colors, however try to keep it elegant and simple. Go for a dark color suit and complementing colors for the rest of the items.

    Hi Kara,

    Great site you have.

Next week I will start to apply for the job cabin crew. I was just wondering what you think about my background and maybe have some recommendations what I should do and how.

My background is total different then working as a cabin crew.

I served the Dutch army for 5 years, been to Afghanistan couple of times. The experience was good. Trying to help the people there, after that I moved from the Netherlands to South Africa.

Here I worked as a CPO (close protection officer) sort of bodyguard. In my opinion is this what I could link the closest to the cabin crew job. As a CPO you working in a highly professional but also hostile field, always have to look professional neatly groomed and preform your best some times 48 hours +. You always have to address you client and his guest in a professional way.

But now like I said before this is all, it’s really a different fields of work. I always been interested working for emirates Qatar or other highly professional companies. I am used and like to work with professionals. I am 25 years old. Now I can still chance my career in my opinion.
What do you suggest for me to make them interested in me?

I also have 2 nationalities is that any problem?

I also looked on the internet al the assessment days in South Africa just been done last was 16 of September, must I wait now till next year or do they do personal assessments if they are really interested?

    Looking forward to your reply

    Kind regards Flying Dutchmen

      Reply Reply September 26, 2013

Hi there Flying Dutchman, your background in the military should not be a problem at all. Customer service is appreciated, but not required to get this job. Cabin crew have various professional or educational backgrounds, from doctors and nurses, teachers, waiters or engineers. Whatever you did, you should use it as a strength. I guess there will be no problems with unruly passengers on your flights 🙂
Your dual nationalities are also not an issue.
Assessments in South Africa are organized frequently by Emirates, however you need to contact the agency iCrew for prescreening.

    – Do they employ Nigerians?
    – They do not conduct interviews in Nigeria or Neighboring West African countries, do you think it is wise to travel for an open day?
    – And after applying, MUST you be invited to attend the open day, or you just plan to attend since the venue is stated.
    – The pictures I used in applying, I took in my office with my desk and chair in the background, does that count against me?

Nearest locations where regular recruitment events are organized are Morocco and Tunisia. Both of these countries handle pre-screening with the a local recruitment agency. You need to contact them via email and ask if they accept candidates from different countries.
      – And after applying, MUST you be invited to attend the open day, or you just plan to attend since the venue is stated.
If the event is an open day you don’t need an invitation. If it is an assessment day, then you must be invited.
      – The pictures I used in applying, I took in my office with my desk and chair in the background, does that count against me?
It will not count against you, however try to take the pictures against a simple white wall.

It might be a problem because not mentioning your previous position means that you were not truthful in your application. Especially if the airline includes in their initial questionnaire ‘Have you ever worked for ABC Airlines’. Your history with the company is also very important.
You can always go back and update your application. At one point they will figure it out that you worked for them before.

Hi CB, my area of expertise is with the airlines in the Middle East, namely Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways. I can’t help you with advice for any other airline. As for the flight school, maybe those who attended such a school were more prepared in terms of interview expectations and optimal behavior display. Try researching a bit the interview process for the specific airline you want to apply for and adjust your preparation to fit their needs.

      Tanja,

If you receive an invitation to the Open Day, you go ahead and participate. That however will not guarantee your CV will be selected. If you don’t receive an invitation, you can also participate provided you were not rejected (your status changed to ‘Not Shortlisted’ on the careers portal).
You can apply for Assessment Days (skipping the CV selection part of the Open Day) only if that specific location organizes an Assessment Day.
Depending on the number of candidates, the Assessment Day can be in the same day with the Open Day or the next day. The Final Interview will be one day after the assessment day.

I had a question about the relationship between the online application and attending the Open Day/Assessment/ Final Interview for Emirates.

I completed my application online and got an invitation to an Open Day, but if I go through all the stages, is any referral made back to my online application in the evaluation process?

Or do they give me a reference number on a different portal so I can track the updates during the weeks after the FI ?

My photos in the online app are very casual (would like to ideally change them), and I am preparing business attire ones for OD, so just wondering how this works and if online application is relevant after you’ve gone through the 4 stages in person.

    Thanks so much in advance!!

Alexis, whenever you have the business attire photos, you should immediately update your profile. The profile is important after you go through the Open Day. Make sure that by that time everything is in excellent order. For the Open Day, the most important is your CV, however after you pass the Final Interview and your online application will be reviewed, you want them to find an excellent record of your application.

Of course it is. Start your CV listing your academic achievements. Include there any involvement you had in internships, student clubs or any other activities. You interview will mostly cover your experience in school.

      Dear Oana,

I always recommend that you have all the data in a separate word or text file that you can save and see on your computer. This way, you not only prevent incidents such as losing all the information you input, but also you will have a reference to how you answered some of the questions. This is quite important, especially for questions like ‘Why do you want to work for us?’.
Ensure that you SAVE the data and the proceed to NEXT STEP.
I know it takes some time to finish the application, but that is the first step that has to be done.

      Good luck!

I am just wondering if I should apply for more than one airline. Do they ask you in the interview if you applied anywhere else?

    • Kara

      Reply Reply November 21, 2011

      Dear Fly Girl,

During your interview, the question ‘Have you applied for any other airline’ might come up. If your answer to that is ‘yes’, then expect the following question to come ‘why?’, ‘who would you chose if both airlines will offer you a position’. Be prepared with an answer that will show diplomacy, tact and honesty. For example:
Your interview is with Airline A. They ask ‘What if Airline B also offers you a job as cabin crew’. Your answer should be along the following lines: ‘While I would be honored to be offered a job at two great potential employers, I would opt for Airline A because of the greater cultural diversity and higher chances of future career advancement’
Do not talk bad about the other airline, however do not tell your interviewer that you would take the job that their competitor might offer you either.

If your dream is to be a cabin crew, then I encourage you to apply for all the airlines that are hiring. If your dream is to be a cabin crew for a specific airline, then you should only go for them.

      Hope this helps…

      🙂

      Hi Sasha,

Thanks for stopping by. There is a lot of positions out there that do not have the ‘obvious’ customer service skills. But first of all, let me give you some examples of customer service skills and what do they mean:

-Active listening – understand, interpret and evaluate what you hear.
-Problem-solving – discovering, analyzing and solving problems.
-Patience – work as hard and as long as necessary, without giving up, until we reach our goal and our company’s goal.
      -Proactivity – anticipatory, change-oriented and self-initiated behavior.

I am sure that you make use of these skills every day without thinking too much about it. I know it is not an easy process, but try to switch your perspective when writing your application: think as if you are your supervisor. How would they describe your work?

      Good luck!
